In June 2018, my husband and I were privileged to take an outstanding African safari with four of our friends to see the Great Migration across the Serengeti plain. The migration entails about 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by 300,000 zebra plus smaller numbers of assorted antelope including impala. It is a wondrous sight to behold. Some of the animals ignored the tourists, while others like the zebra were more curious and often looked us over.

It is difficult to explain why, but being there felt like home to me in the very best sense of the word. I felt completely at peace and that this is where I belonged. This was despite being totally aware that if I were to get out of our safari vehicle and wander around by myself, there are too many predators for me to last long. Even so, I was enthralled by the beauty of both the scenic landscape and the wild animals living in their natural habitat. I painted this during the height of the Covid pandemic and vowed that when it was safe to travel again, we would return to Africa.
