In May 2022, my husband Russell and I emerged from our Covid pandemic cocoon and flew to France to embark on a canal barge cruise in the Champagne region with two other couples who are very good friends of ours. This was a trip that had been originally scheduled to take place two years earlier until Covid shut down the world. Russell and I had been very cautious about our exposure to others during the intervening two years, so it was even more of a shock to us to come out of our seclusion in the hustle and bustle of Paris, France where we spent several very enjoyable days before our cruise.

While in Paris, we also toured the surrounding area, which included a visit to the wondrous gardens of one of the founders of Impressionism, artist Claude Monet, at his home in Giverny. It was overcast that day and rained lightly on and off, but that did not diminish the glory of the gardens, brimming with colorful spring flowers. The towering spires of foxgloves were particularly spectacular. Although it was the wrong time of the year for the famous water lilies to be blooming, it was so beautiful there, I was not disappointed in the least.
