On our first night in Morocco in the spring of 2023, we stayed in Rabat at a lovely boutique hotel called Villa Mandarine. Rabat is the capital of Morocco and is quite a modern and beautiful city. The hotel neighborhood made us think of a Moroccan version of the beautiful residential area of the flats of Beverly Hills, California. The hotel property previously was the site of a large orange grove owned by a French family who had lived in Morocco for generations. Eventually, a home was built there for the family, along with a garden and pool. The home later was converted and expanded into a small hotel.
The large ceramic elephant depicted in this painting sits on the front lawn of the hotel. We estimate that the top of its head (not including the extended trunk) might be about six feet high. I love garden art and I find the whimsy of the brilliant blue elephant to be charming. As you can see, the elephant is no longer in the room…
