At the end of our spring 2023 Moroccan tour, we returned to Casablanca for our final night before flying back home. For a change of scenery, our group had decided to stay at a hotel on the beach.
After checking into our hotel room, my husband Russell and I went out of the rear entrance of the hotel and took a leisurely stroll along the beach before dinner. Being Morocco, there were camels and horses on the beach. The sky was heavily overcast, making it a bit gloomy outside. To the north, there was a thick mist waxing and waning, but I immediately was heartened by several brief glimpses of the glowing edifice of a lovely lighthouse in the distance.
At the time, we did not know anything about the lighthouse. I since have learned that construction began in 1916 and it became operational in 1920. It sits on Casablanca’s Atlantic Ocean coastline and, at 167 feet, it is Morocco’s tallest lighthouse. It is shaped like a minaret and was designed by a French architect who was inspired by mosques. It has an automated lighting device generating three consecutive flashes that can be seen from 30 nautical miles away.
