The title of this painting is a multiple play on words. The painting is based on a candid photo I took in early spring 2024, on an overcast day before most of the deciduous trees had fully leafed out. I had gone to Cheekwood with my lovely cousin Carmela Joy Hayes who lives on the other side of town from me. I have countless cousins on my father’s side of my family and I was unaware of Joy before moving to Nashville. Fortunately, a mutual cousin

connected us early on and I have had numerous delightful outings with Joy. In her youth, Joy was a soprano member of a renowned internationally touring choral group and we often attend musical concerts together. During the height of the Covid pandemic, in an abundance of caution, we did not see each other often and now are making up for lost time.

The painting depicts Joy looking out over the daffodil fields. I wonder what she was contemplating? I love the top she is wearing with yellow stripes on one sleeve contrasting with navy stripes on the other arm. While we were there, a young lady in a long flowing white dress was wandering the grounds with a photographer by her side. Is she a model or ??? She can be seen in the painting kneeling in the distance on the far right. Can you spot the two tiny black wrought iron chairs?
