Egyptian fishermen and women not only go after a variety of fish on the River Nile, they also fish for plastics. VeryNile (a non-governmental organization/NGO, see http://www.verynile.org) pays for the plastics that are recovered from the river while also recycling and creating jobs remaking them into useful products. This results in a cleaner river that is healthier for the fish and people, whilst producing a sustainable local economy income stream for both fishing and plastics.

One of the highlights of our Nile River cruise in December 2022 was sailing on a felucca on the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt. This was the most relaxing experience of our trip. The scene depicted here is from a photo that I took across from the Old Cataract Hotel (cataracts are another name for river rapids). This stunning Victorian hotel opened in 1899 and was built on granite bluffs on the shores of the River Nile overlooking Elephantine Island. Many celebrities and dignitaries have stayed at the hotel over the years, but it was personally most relevant to me because the famous mystery writer Agatha Christie wrote “Death on the Nile” while living at the hotel. My mother was a huge Agatha Christie fan, devouring all of her books with joy. Additionally, when my husband Russell and I saw the 2022 movie version of “Death on the Nile” early in 2022, we turned to each other simultaneously and said, “Let’s take a Nile River cruise!” We were delighted that Russell’s brother Ethan and wife Brenda were able to join us.
